What is PPF?
Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a government-backed savings scheme with guaranteed returns and complete tax exemption under the EEE model — your deposits, interest, and maturity amount are all tax-free.
Key PPF Features
- Interest rate: 7.1% p.a. (compounded annually, revised quarterly by Govt. of India)
- Minimum investment: ₹500 per year; Maximum: ₹1,50,000 per year
- Lock-in period: 15 years (extendable in 5-year blocks)
- Full 80C deduction on contributions up to ₹1.5 lakh
- Partial withdrawal allowed from Year 7 onwards
- Loan against PPF available between Year 3 and Year 6
Old vs New Tax Regime and PPF
Under the New Tax Regime, 80C deductions are not available — which reduces PPF's tax advantage at contribution stage. However, the interest and maturity remain tax-free under both regimes. Use our ITR Calculator to compare regimes.
